Lucien Zell is a poet-photographer. Born in Los Angeles, he lives in the graceful chaos of Prague from where he ventures out to various places across the globe. In his photographs, Zell captures not only the outer, but hints of the inner world too, seeing his subjects not only with his eyes—but with his mind.

FLEEING AND FLYING

Lucien Zell Poet Poem

I sat before the blank wall
until it started writing on me.
The wall crumbled… I crumbled…
the graffiti remains.

Photography, coming from ‘photo’ (light), ‘graphy’ (writing) literally means ‘light writing’ and when it is done well, such light-writing conveys not merely prose—but poetry. Here, in this photographer’s work, we are confronted with a photo-poet. Coming not from the middle of nowhere, but even farther out, the periphery of nowhere, each image shimmers with the awareness of a fleeting eternity. An eternity that flees as much as it flies. For fleeing can be mistaken for flying.

The Latin phrase ‘Tempus Fugit’ is typically rendered in English as the well known phrase ‘Time Flies’. In fact, as any Latin scholar can tell you, this is a mistranslation. ‘Fugit’ means not ‘flies’—but rather ‘flees’: Time is a fugitive. Time runs away. Time escapes us all. And yet, in some modest yet potent way, the art present in Zell’s photos holds that fugitive tight and won’t let him go. The fugitive is held in the fragile arms of light and shadow, held in the light-writing of this generous witness. Generous, yes, because these were his moments.

Now they are ours.
